BRISBANE, Australia (October 10, 2011) – The Food Spectrum Ironman Charity Challenge, the highly successful fundraising program conducted at Ironman events across Australia, will again provide athletes with a chance to use this season’s Ironman race to make a difference to those in need. Launched at SunSmart Ironman Western Australia 2010, the Food Spectrum Ironman Charity Challenge has since raised more than $118,000 for recipient groups. For season 2011/2012, athletes racing at Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie, SunSmart Ironman Western Australia, Ironman Asia Pacific Championship and Ironman Australia can create a Food Spectrum Ironman Charity Challenge fundraising page and raise funds for one of the official recipient groups. Urban Hotel Group Ironman Australia and Urban Hotel Group Ironman 70.3 Port Macquarie will air on Ironman’s Australian broadcast partner, OneHD at 3.30pm on Sunday June 5, 2011. The one hour program follows the incredible professional races in the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events as well as follow incredible age grouper Kane Towns, competing in his first Ironman in memory of his late father and legendary athlete, Ched; and Dave Orlowski, one of the Ironman originals from 1978, competing in Urban Hotel Group Ironman Australia after riding 1,200 Kilometres from Melbourne to Port Macquarie before the race. As a prelude to the Urban Hotel Group Ironman Australia broadcast, SpecSavers Ironman South Africa will air on OneHD on Thursday June 2, 2011 at 2.30pm.
An unprecedented speed of registration of general entries at Ironman Australia 2012 has seen 1,550 athletes successfully secure a general entry for Ironman Australia 2012. 1,450 general entries were secured upon opening of registrations at 12pm Wednesday May 11, 2011. An additional 100 general entries went on sale at 12pm AEST today May 12, 2011. These 100 general entries were snapped up at a record pace with the first 100 competitors successfully entering the registration system almost immediately upon the opening of registrations at 12 Noon. Once the first 100 competitors successfully entered the system to begin the registration process, the sold out status of the additional 100 entries was posted on the registration page. Due to persistent rain and inclement weather, Oxley Oval, the venue for the Urban Hotel Group Ironman Australia Carbo event has been inundated with water. As a result, the venue is unsuitable for use on Friday April 29, 2011. For this reason THE CARBO EVENT AS SCHEDULED IS CANCELLED and in its place, three ‘mini carbo’ sessions will take place in the Glasshouse Theatre. Each session will be hosted by Mike Reilly and feature special guests including Craig Alexander and Kane Towns. As the Glasshouse Theatre has a 600 person capacity, sessions will be divided into athlete number range, plus any additional ticket sales to partners and friends within those ticket ranges. Additional tickets to the Friday night Welcome Dinner and Monday night Awards Banquet will go on sale this Friday, March 25 at 12pm AEDT/9am AWST. A limited supply of tickets are on offer to both events – 400 for the Welcome Dinner and 500 for the Awards Banquet. Ironman and Ironman 70.3 receive entry to the Welcome Dinner by showing their competitor wristbands, while Ironman Australia competitors will receive entry with their wristbands to the Awards Banquet. Please note that the Awards Ceremony for Ironman 70.3 will take place on Sunday evening at the Glasshouse and any Ironman 70.3 competitors wishing to attend the Awards Banquet on Monday evening will need to purchase a ticket.
