Athletes must enter the water across the timing mat at the boat ramp in Westport Park which is the Swim Finish point and swim north/west about 200m to the start line beside and in line with Sails Resort. The swim begins with a deep-water start.  Athletes need to be aware that the foreshore rocks and wharf structures have oyster shells attached to them so they should not use these areas to either enter the water or hang on to once in the water.

It is a mass start and athletes should self-seed according to their swimming ability. Athletes swim approximately 600m north towards Settlement Point to make two right turns approximately 75m apart. Athletes then swim approximately 600m south and then veer slightly left opposite Sails Resort and swim approximately 300m towards the CBD to make another two right hand turns approximately 50m apart. Athletes then swim 300m to the start line at Sails Resort to complete lap 1.

On Lap 2 athletes follow the same course but after making the turns at the CBD end of the course they swim approximately 200m for a left turn to the swim finish at the Westport Park boat ramp.

After crossing the timing mat and passing through the showers athletes turn right and proceed approximately 100m along the roadway and then turn left into the Swim-to-Bike transition marquee in the bottom car park after collecting their bike gear bag .
